Old Radio Shows Bring Forward The Lost Horizon
Did you know that ‘Shangri-La’ is a phrase used to describe the perfect paradise? Movies, music and even books have featured the phrase. Even to this day, the term is in common use.
Do you know where it came from?
It was the novelist James Hilton that wrote Lost Horizon. It is set in 1930s China. The story tells of a plane crash in the Himalayan mountain range, wherein survivors of the event discover a complex, very different but paradise of a place known as Shangri-La.
Director Frank Capra shot the move remake of the story, and much like other movies of the time, was developed into an eventual old time radio shows classic.
The story goes on to reveal that Shangri-La was completely at peace, with the residents living there like immortals. It would seem that the survivors discovering the place was more than simply a happy accident. It turns out that the high lama of Shangri-La needed someone with superior knowledge to follow in his footsteps, and it would turn out that the British diplomat Hugh Conway was to be that replacement. Mallinson, the vice consul to the British diplomat, wanted to simply leave the place and take Lo-Tsen, the love of his life, with him. As such, it is Conway that is also torn between staying in paradise, or taking Lo-Tsen for himself and fleeing to England.
As the drama unfolds, it is uncovered that each of the four characters has their own reasons for wanting to either stay or leave and this Tibetan paradise is more than what it seems. The story of Lost Horizon is one that seems timeless and has been appreciated by all kinds of audiences.
Many old time radio shows were in fact developed based on the biggest films of the Golden Age of Radio, whereby the cast members of the silver screen version even returned to play their respective characters in the radio production. Radio theater production companies, ranging from the Theater of Romance and Lux Radio Theater, have always played a part in producing some of the biggest old time radio shows, including Lost Horizon.
It was the turn of the musical that brought Lost Horizon to yet another segment of the entertainment industry. But, it did not do so well in that area, and by comparison to the older versions of the show, previous successes were much more long-term than this one.
The classic old time radio shows of the era were successful thanks to their being well adapted for the ears of the radio audience.
In 1948 when Hallmark Theater produced their version of Lost Horizon the author James Hilton can be heard giving a message for the New Year. On 10th September 1950, James Hilton could be heard in recorded commentaries for various Theater versions of his story, and he passed away from liver cancer in 1954.
To this day, Lost Horizon is seen to be a truly timeless old time radio shows version of the novel.
