Can I use a metal grille on my induction cooker?
I was watching a TV chef sear a piece of fish directly on the glass of an Infrared cooking hob, and it got me thinking: can I place a metal (cast iron) grille directly on the glass of my induction hob to get those sear lines on my steaks? I figure if the grille gets hot enough, it’d do the job of an electric BBQ. Or is a grill pan better suited for the purpose?
EDIT: The cooker won’t let the pans get past a certain temperature, so it’s not a matter of the grille melting the glass on the hob. I meant that the induction hob is what heats the grille (just like it heats the pans I normally use), not that I want to grab a hot grille off the BBQ and use that on my precious hob.
I don’t think you’ll harm your cooktop but I doubt it will work either. On my own cooktop the burners aren’t even activated unless they detect a ferrous metal pot/pan on them. In the case of your grill it probably won’t be touching enough of the surface to activate the burner. But in any event it’s worth a try. I just read through my cooktop owner’s manual and while it mentions that flat cookware works best, and that aluminum foil should never touch an induction cooktop, it has no issues with putting a grill on the cooktop.
