Power Tools: An Evolution of Progress by lipusnaccy

Back in the dawn of civilization, long before power tools, our Neanderthal ancestors fashioned crude tools by chipping away at a rock with another, larger rock.

Needless to say, this means of fashioning a rough axe or knife by pounding one rock while holding another probably accounted for a lot of cave man cursing, as it seems likely that fingers and thumbs were smashed on a frequent, regular basis.

The Egyptians came along and managed to build the pyramids using nothing more than primitive copper tools to both quarry and cut the massive stone. It is widely believed that these huge blocks of stone were made by a kind of drill, sharpened to a point and rotated round and round by twine that was attached to a cross piece and moved in a sawing, back and forth motion.

Can you imagine the incredible amount of work that went into drilling even one little hole this way?

Thank goodness we have power tools today!

Power tools came along toward the end of the 1800s with the invention of the electric motors that made efficient power tools a possibility. The Bosch Company pioneered its first power drill in 1932 and since then; many companies have produced state-of-the-art power tools that have contributed so much to the efficiency, safety and productivity of industry professionals all around the world.

For example, in 1923 an inventor from the United States who went on to found the DeWalt Power Tool Company, Raymond DeWalt, came out with the first ever radial arm saw.

This groundbreaking tool was followed by a succession of innovative power tools in the years since then right on up to the present, when researchers are constantly designing and developing new and improved power tools to make our lives easier.
